Why This Class
As a parent, you sometimes need to make decisions without having all the facts—and count on principles to deduce the right answer. You want your student to be comfortable with this process in their life, too. This course helps by guiding them through advanced geometry lessons, while also polishing their algebra skills and introducing trigonometry.
Mentors in this course help students explore geometric proofs (the ancestors of modern logic) involving lines and angles, apply the principles of probability to real-life scenarios, and learn what types of problems trigonometry can solve. With the support of mentors and math tutors, students also take their first dive into quadratics and the quadratic formula. In the process, they complete the foundational math training that will prepare them to excel in advanced high school courses and beyond.
By completing this course, students gain experience in using principles to evaluate a limited set of facts and extract the truth. They come to appreciate the value of this skill in daily life, as well as math.
Note: This class is offered as both a Classic course and Honors course. Honors Math is for highly engaged students who like to think deeply and challenge themselves. Honors students will engage with a weekly project, reading, problem of the week, or research topic that will help them dive deeper into the subject and think more critically. These weekly WAM also provides students with an opportunity to explain their deep thinking and push past procedural math to a more complete, conceptual understanding.
