Why This Class

As a parent, you want your student to gain the invaluable reasoning skills that come from mastering math. You also want them to learn those skills in the order that’s most likely to stick. By combining core lessons from algebra and geometry, this course does both—solidifying your student’s math foundations while fostering critical thinking habits that will last a lifetime.

Mentors in this course lead students on an exploration of linear equations, inequalities, and functions. Students learn how to make sense of mathematical sentences, discover multiple ways to solve algebraic equations and see how graphing makes numbers and shapes come alive. In the process, they use algebraic thinking to bridge the gap between solving problems in math and real life and hone the mindset to win any argument by studying original works by great mathematicians.

Students emerge from this course with an expanded toolbelt that prepares them to explore the world of high school math with confidence. They are excited to continue using math to increase their brain power.

Note: This class is offered as both a Classic course and Honors course. Honors Math is for highly engaged students who like to think deeply and challenge themselves. Honors students will engage with a weekly project, reading, problem of the week, or research topic that will help them dive deeper into the subject and think more critically. These weekly WAM also provides students with an opportunity to explain their deep thinking and push past procedural math to a more complete, conceptual understanding.
