High School Math 3B

Posted by Williamsburg Learning on Jan 14, 2022 2:04:22 PM

Why This Class
To excel at school and in life, your student needs to hone the skill of abstract thinking: the ability to see beyond the here-and-now and recognize the patterns and connections between ideas. This course helps by training your student in the tools of advanced algebra, applying the fundamentals of arithmetic to abstract scenarios.

Mentors in this course guide students on an exploration of rational, logarithmic, sinusoidal, inverse, and composite functions. Students also learn to model real-world situations with statistics. By doing so, they learn lifelong skills including data interpretation and advanced handling of measurements, proportions, and equations. In the process, they prepare for post-secondary math courses or a high school diploma and expand their view of math as a real-world problem-solving tool.

By the end of this course, students gain confidence in the process of using a concrete set of principles to solve an abstract problem. This new skill prepares them to excel in future math learning—and to think more creatively and dynamically in every area of life.

High School Math 3A

Posted by Williamsburg Learning on Jan 14, 2022 1:58:14 PM

Why This Class
As a parent, you want an open door for your student to embark on whatever career path they choose. Understanding advanced algebra is essential for anyone hoping to work in a STEM-related field—and it’s a requirement for most college applications. This course covers the algebra that will help ensure your student can pursue their goals without being held back.

Mentors in this course help students apply their existing mastery of arithmetic to problems involving variables instead of numbers. With the help of mentors and math tutors as needed, students also learn about exponential functions, radical functions, and complex numbers. In the process, they gain higher-level skills that will especially prepare them for success in a math-based trade or technical career.

Students emerge from this course with an enhanced ability to notice what changes and what remains constant—both in math and life. They are on track to completing the math skill set that will open doors along their chosen future path.

High School Math 2B

Posted by Williamsburg Learning on Jan 14, 2022 1:54:16 PM

Why This Class
As a parent, you sometimes need to make decisions without having all the facts—and count on principles to deduce the right answer. You want your student to be comfortable with this process in their life, too. This course helps by guiding them through advanced geometry lessons, while also polishing their algebra skills and introducing trigonometry.

Mentors in this course help students explore geometric proofs (the ancestors of modern logic) involving lines and angles, apply the principles of probability to real-life scenarios, and learn what types of problems trigonometry can solve. With the support of mentors and math tutors, students also take their first dive into quadratics and the quadratic formula. In the process, they complete the foundational math training that will prepare them to excel in advanced high school courses and beyond.

By completing this course, students gain experience in using principles to evaluate a limited set of facts and extract the truth. They come to appreciate the value of this skill in daily life, as well as math.

High School Math 2A

Posted by Williamsburg Learning on Jan 14, 2022 1:47:32 PM

Why This Class
Note: This class is offered as both a Classic course and Honors course. Honors Math is for highly engaged students who like to think deeply and challenge themselves. Honors students will engage with a weekly project, reading, problem of the week, or research topic that will help them dive deeper into the subject and think more critically. These weekly WAM also provides students with an opportunity to explain their deep thinking and push past procedural math to a more complete, conceptual understanding.

Why This Class
As a parent, you want your student to hone the skill of making smart decisions. Both algebra and geometry promote logical thinking skills that help adults make wise financial choices and intelligently analyze news reports. This course integrates lessons from both branches of math to bring your student’s judgment to a new level, in math and everyday life.

Mentors in this course introduce students to exponential properties and help them extend the core concepts of arithmetic to polynomials—and then apply it all to real-life scenarios. Students use geometry to explore the mathematical characteristics of solids, circles, and conic sections. With the help of math tutors as needed, they also use the principles of exponential growth and decay to answer practical questions.

By the end of this course, students round out their foundational skills in algebra and feel prepared to take on more advanced studies. Most importantly, they gain a more logical mindset that equips them to make better decisions every day.
